Gibbons is making excuses like a battered wife.
Next up...

Not sure if it's been said already but here is a link to KTVU - Bay Area Sports www.ktvu.com/sports/9714325/detail.htmlOn another fan forum, fans are saying they saw a bloody nose. Why lie? Would like to see the bloody nose if anyone knows where to find it, please tell.

Sportsnet showed him wiping his nose with a towel. I couldn't see any blood, though.
Both guys are to blame here -- Lilly for being hot-headed on the mound and refusing to give Gibby the ball at first, and Gibbons for being unable to control his temper.
Who threw the "first punch", if there were punches, is an important consideration ... but to me, it only makes a difference in whether Gibbons gets fired now or at the end of the season. If he threw the first punch, he should be gone.
If not, and if Lilly started it, it's hard to blame Gibbons for being a part of whatever fight there was.
However, following Lilly into the clubhouse was a stupid, stupid move. He had to confront Lilly about what happened ... but after the game. If a player is hot like Lilly was, the prudent move -- the move of a good manager -- is to let him go back to the clubhouse, fume, rant, throw things around if necessary, and get it out of his system. You confront him after he's cooled down. Following him into the dugout immediately after a blowup like that will lead to innevitable results. If there weren't punches thrown, it's only because the entire Blue Jays team ran back there to tear the two apart.
Now, when Gibbons and Lilly commented after the game, they kept saying "no punches were thrown". That doesn't contradict the statement of the photographer at all -- pushing, shoving, pulling, headlocks -- whatever he says he saw didn't involve punching. But it DID involve physical confrontation, and there is no reason to doubt his word on this. He's the only neutral third party we have. And he was pretty clear about Gibbons being the one who "started it".
The Jays need to talk to all parties involved and sort out what happened. It won't be hard to figure it out. And if the manager needs to go, he needs to go. You certainly don't stand behind Lilly for his actions ... but you can't stand behind a manager if it turns out that he started a fight. Assaulting an employee is more than sufficient grounds for termination.

Whatever happened last night, Shea is still smug little jackass. His voice doesnt matter one iota in this.

I'm afraid you are wrong. Shea's voice seems a make more sense as the day goes along.

really... and none of his hate towards the team or management isn't because he was fired? Riiiiight.
What else would you expect him to say? 'I was the real problem there... what the heck's up with Ted'?
