I don't know too much about what's going on, but I figured a thread for the Israeli/Hezbollah conflict is warranted. I'm sure Hawk knows more than me, so I hope others come along and debate/discuss it.

If there weren't geopolitical implications involved, I'd say that like my parents, they deserve each other.

Good to see you back in the saddle here, BH!
On topic, the situation seems to be drawing to a close...Monday morning the cease-fire kicks in, and everybody involved has ostensibly agreed to it.

I doubt the cease fire will end the underlying problems - the UN's track record at that is not very good. Israel has gone through some strange flip flops on Lebanon since the 82 invasion. Just a few years ago it left, because it concluded that the occupation was a blunder. Now its reprising its eighties policies (although it wont go as far this time and may leave sooner).
In the end I suspect this reflects a lack of good alternatives. All their choices are bad so the move between them over time.

There is apparently sharp divison in Israel over the invasion. Conservatives want to continue it.

The cease fire won't last through the end of the week I'm afraid.

I dont know if it will ever really start. They are fighting now. How often does anyone pay attention to UN resolutions?

Apparently, Mr. Hirsh of the New Yorker has an article in the latest issue that os pretty damning of Israel here. The article will apperently show that Israel had planned this invasion fo Lebenon for several months...perhaps aas many as 6 months, with US approval...and had only been waiting fo Hezbolla to make a move that would justifty the invasion.
I llove the New Yorker, despite its very liberal NY tendancies, and it has some great writing.
Its a must read piece

Hirsch is a very good writer and the New Yorker is one of America's great magazines. However, IIRC, Hirsch has a tendency to play a little loose with the facts and go a little long on the conspiracy theories. I think he was the one who suggested that KAL 007 really was on a spy mission when the Soviets shot it down.

Israel has plans to invade every nation around it (much like every other nation)....due to the small size of the country and being outmanned in every quarter they even keep jets on 24hr hot status in case they have to get moving in a hurry.
I'm not sure why a planned invasion is such a black eye for Israel. It isn't like Hizb'allah suddenly turned into a threat....wouldn't the prudent thing to do to prepare properly and check with one's allies before engaging the enemy? Isn't this what we're being lambasted for not doing in Iraq?

The US probably has plans to invade every country on earth. That is what military planners do, they plan such things (one of the sharpest criticisims of Rumsfeld was the lack of planning for Iraq in fact). So its not surprising that Israel, which relies on offense and speed would plan for invading other near by countries.
The black eye if there is one for Israel is that 1)its operations were far larger than the threat posed by Hezbollah, 2) most who got killed were Lebanese civilians and the damage to the bridges could cause widespread famine and 3) it destroyed or badly weakened the Lebanese state that the US has been trying to rebuild since Syria left.
I am not saying those are black eyes just that many would consider them such.
