What is the best way to transfer files from one computer to another? What would I need to get to do that? Basically all I want to transfer is some documents and it would take alot of time to retype them on my new computer. The computer I want to get them off of isn't connected to the internet. Thanks

The computer I want to get them off of isn't connected to the internet. Did it used to be? The reason I ask is that it'll make it a whole lot faster, and easier, if it has that capability. (Don't worry... I won't ask you to send your files to the internet and then back again.) Also, what OS do both computers have? I assume the new one is Windows XP. The old one? And do you have a router - a thingy that lets more than one computer connect to your internet?

Ok, let me give you the whole story about this computer. It's got some work related files and info that I need and would LOVE to have on my new computer. It has Windows 98 on it and it was a computer from work... but it uses a dial up for internet. I don't use a dial up, I have a cable hook up for internet and yes I have a router thiingy. Oh yeah, I have Windows XP.

Hmm... so you don't see a connection on the back of the work one like the one you use for your cable internet, eh? Ok, does this 98 machine have a CD burner? If not, are you willing to spend about $10 to add something to that 98 work machine that you can take out when we're done this project?

Nope, don't see anything like that on the back and nope, it doesn't have a cd burner on it. Yup, I'm willing to spend some $$ if it will help me in getting those files to the new one.

I'd buy a Flash drive. You stick it in your comp, put the files on it, take it out, stick it in the other comp and you've got the files transfered. They're not too expensive either...

Borrow an External Harddrive from someone.

Both good options also. They would use the USB port on the 98 machine, and also on your new one. The only difference might be that the USB ports on your new computer are faster. So getting your files off the old PC will take longer than copying them to the new one. No biggie.
What I was going to suggest is purchasing a LAN card. aka a Network Interface Card. That, and a network cable about six feet or so long, and we can "grab" the files directly off the old one and copy or move them to the new one. It's the fastest method.
Interested?

Any decent computer retailer should have such "thingys." I'm sure you'll find them at a local Best Buy or similar. Even a corner computer shop. Should be cheap.

Doesn't sound like you have too many files, can you put them on a floppy? Or doesn't your new computer have a floppy drive?
