Actually, this is old news from June of this year, but in case you haven't heard... Grisoft, makers of AVG Anti-Virus, has acquired Ewido anti-spyware. This is good news, as I know many of you may have used Ewido to solve spyware issues, upon NE's suggestion. In keeping with their "free to good home" policy, Ewido is now free for home users, just like AVG is. The download is a full-featured demo of the "Professional" edition, which is a paid program. After 30 days, the extra features of the Professional edition disable themselves, and you're left with the free for home users version. You can, at any time, purchase the "Professional" edition and turn those extra features back on simply by entering a license code. You can find the free editions of both programs here.

Yup, old news but good news.
I'm running AVGfree and Ewido on my latptop. That and the generic Windows firewall should be all you need (as long as you remember to configure the firewall and update your software regularly).

Using both as well, but the generic Windows firewall should be disabled and you should install a better one than that. Such as Zonealarm (free; but not the pro version). The Windows one only stops stuff from being downloaded to your machine. If somehow you've installed something by mistake and it starts sending stuff out, WinXP's firewall won't catch it.
