BOSTON (AP) -- Phil Kessel, the fifth choice in this year's NHL draft, signed a multiyear contract with the Boston Bruins.
The 18-year-old center played one season of college hockey at Minnesota in 2005-06, finishing second on the team in scoring and sixth in league with 18 goals and 33 assists in 34 games.
"Phil is a player with world-class speed and gifted offensive talents," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said. "We feel he is ready to begin his professional development and we are looking forward to seeing him compete at training camp."
Kessel, a 6-foot, 189-pounder from Madison, Wis., was the career leader in goals for USA Hockey's national development team.
