How comical is it that J.P. Ricciardi sold himself to the Blue Jays executives as the small budget "king". He claimed that he could do great things with a $50 million dollar payroll and that the team would be competitive in the AL East under his regime.
Ted Rogers subsequently upped JP's $50 million dollar budget and J.P. has shown to everyone that he is a fraud. The team is hardly "competing" on a $75 million dollar budget... So, what happened? Let's begin by looking at the amount of money J.P. has shelled out for players who aren't even contributing to the team in one way or another.

2006
Players no longer on MLB roster
Josh Towers 2.9
Corey Koskie 3.25
Total: 6.15
Players who have been ineffective
AJ Burnett 7
Total: $13.15
That's a total of $13.15 million dollars WASTED this year alone. In 2007 it's worse.
2007
Molina .5 (assuming the option isn't picked up)
Towers 2.9
Koskie 3.75
Hinske 2.8125
Total: $9.9625
__________________________________________________
That's almost $20 freaking million dollars wasted in two years. I wonder how exactly he planned on "competing" on a $50 million dollar budget when he is seemingly handing a large chunk of his money to anyone and everyone who comes a knockin'?

According to an article on batters box(http://www.battersbox.ca/article.php?story=20060801115804195), the Jays had $77 million to spend in 2007 prior to the Hinske trade. Now with $3.876025 off the books in the Hinske trade, that leaves us with $80.876025.
Let's see how this can work...
Pitchers
SP1 Halladay 12.8
SP2 Burnett 12
SP3 Chacin .425
SP4 Mcgowan .35
SP5 Marcum .35
RP1 Ryan 9
RP2 Downs 1.5
RP3 Frasor .8
RP4 Accardo .4
RP5 League .35
RP6 Tallet .35
RP7 Taubenheim .35
Total: $38.675 M
Position Players
LF Johnson 3
CF Wells 5.6
RF Rios 3
OF JFG .35
1B Overbay 4
2B Adams .45
SS Hill .4
3B Glaus 11
C Phillips .5
IF Roberts .35
C Thigpen .35
DH Lind .35
Total: $29.35 M
Money thrown away
Molina .5 (assuming the option isn't picked up)
Towers 2.9
Koskie 3.75
Hinske 2.8125
Total: $9.9625
Grand Total: $77.9875 M
That leaves JP with $2.888525 M... There are so many holes to fill and so little money to do so with. This team might have trouble treading water next year, forget about fighting for the division or the wildcard. It's the year 2000 ALL over again.

Look at all the money committed after this 2007... (For this exercise we will assume that Ted Rogers will commit another $210 million/three year plan. Giving the team a budget of $70 M per).
2008
Halladay 10
Burnett 12
Ryan 10
Glaus 10
$42 million dollars tied up in four players... That leaves $28 million to fill in the other 20 open slots.
2009
Halladay 14.25
Burnett 12
Ryan 10
Glaus 12.75
That's $49 million dollars tied up in four players... That leaves $21 million dollars to fill in the other 20 open slots.
The supporting cast surrounding these four will worsen year after year as we reach the backloaded portions of their contracts. Ricciardi's short-sightedness has handcuffed this team for at least the next four years. Unfortunately he has no eye for creative (and cheap) ways of achieving good production.
For example, Eric Hinske.
If kept, Hinske could have been a huge part of a monster two-headed DH. Hinske is good for a .820+ OPS against right-handed pitching, now considering that two thirds of the league's pitching is right handed, that isn't half bad.
Now put Hinske with a Cuddyer type lefty masher and you've got yourself a cheap DH with great production (.840+ OPS).
But instead, Ricciardi thought it would be more useful to free up $3.876025 M instead. The sad thing is that, JP won't make good use of that money at all. I can guarantee it.

Now, if JP had any kind of foresight whatsoever, he would have cleared house BEFORE the non-waiver trade deadline. There was a ton of talent to be gained and a ton of money to be saved.
But why didn't he?
Was he expecting a miracle? Did he really think the Jays would win 15 straight and take over the division lead? Is he dellusional?
Think about the trading chips we had...
Lilly
Speier
Shoeneweis
Catalanotto
Molina
Zaun
All of the above mentioned players are free agents after the 2006 season. Now what was the point of holding on to any of them past the non-waiver trade deadline?
If we had traded every one of those players without eating any salary, we would have saved roughly $5 million off of next years budget AND we could have picked up a couple of decent prospects. Why would he wait? What was the point? Now all of these guys (save for Shoe) will walk away, leaving the Jays with nothing. We have no money to re-sign anyone or offer anyone arbitration.

I still don't quite understand how JP can still have this job, it baffles me. I'd be out of a job by now if I spent 14% of my yearly budget and had absolutely nothing to show for it. And yet, Paul Godfrey signed this man to an extention and shows no signs of souring on him. This man still has fans who will take a bullet for him and defend every single mind boggling move he makes.
Why? Someone help me understand.
This team is drowning in a sea of JP's inadequacies and no one seems to be able to see it...
