If we can close out this game we'll be just 6.5 back of the Yankees. I think its very realistic to think we could get withing 5 back for Sept 1, seeing as we have series against Baltimore, KC and Cleveland coming up. If we are 5 or less back heading into a September where we play 13 games against the Bosox and Yankees, ANYTHING can happen. Keep the faith guys!

The season was over the day they decided to give Josh Towers another shot and depended on Lilly for 15 wins.

Yup, it is ridiculous to have a projected 5th starter going into the season who makes a little over 2 million who had been 22 and 21 over the past two seasons, one season with an ERA of 3.71.
And Lilly, with a bit more support could ahve 14 wins already, he should have won July 3rd when he gave up two runs in 6 aginst the Rangers. He could have won his ND July 22nd against hte Yankees, giving up 3 runs in 6. Same as again the Angels May 6th, 2 ERs in 7 innings. And against the YAnkees April 19th, 2ERs in 6IP.
I don't really think that either of those two expectations were that farfetched but things happen and it didn't work out. But to say the season was over with these expectations is stupid.

BH, you're suggesting this season was over before it started?
Come on man...

Come on nothing. The upcoming Leaf season is getting the same prognosis from me.

agreed there.
JFJ is a complete tool. You've probably noticed I'm rarely on the Leafs board anymore. After all these years of them taking fans like me for granted, I've finally started to see my own interest drop. I won't be spending a dime on them this year.
10 Jays games, a half dozen Raps games, and zero Leafs games planned. I'll still watch and cheer, but I'm not spending another dime as long as JFJackass is steering the ship

Rosario sent down, now another spot is open...could it be JP about to announce who he got in one of the trades?

I doubt it, personally. The Schoenweis trade was to dump a problem, and Hinske was to dump a contract. In both cases, I would expect we get a low level prospect, or "prospect" in the case of the Cincy deal. Certantly nobody who could step onto the 25 man roster.

No, we're not done yet. It's still a long shot, and at this point I don't think even the addition of a frontline player or two would make a difference ... but I'll continue to believe that a well-timed hot streak could put us right in the thick of things again. Never lose the faith until the mathematics fail to work.

I was thinking about the same thing last night. 6.5 is reachable if everyting works out...
But for me its the wildcard situation that bugs me. I wish the Jays were closer.... I just don't see the Yanks blowing it... that team is stacked

if we win tonight and the Yanks split, we're 6 back. If we win tonight and the Yanks get swept by Bosox, we're 5 back.
And 5 back is not a whole lot when theres still almost a month and a half, and 13 games versus the Yanks and Red Sox.
I've got tickets to 3 of the 4 games vs the Bosox at the end of the year. Here's hoping they still mean something!

The Jays have been done for a while. For them to reach the playoffs would take a huge run of luck in the remaing 6 weeks or so.
Let's put it this way, the Jays are 7-3 over their last 10 and still sit 8 losses behind the Yankees and 6 losses behind the Sox for the division.
The wildcard is even worse, 8 losses behind the White Sox and 6 losses behind both the Twins and Red Sox.
That's just too much to overcome. The Jays have to play 6 to 8 games better than TWO teams for the division and 6 to 8 games better than THREE teams for the wild card.
If they win maybe 14-15 games in a row then sure they have a realistic shot. But there's very little chance of that. This isn't giving up, it's facing reality.
I hope they finish strong and get within 3 games of a playoff spot or something. That would give them something to hang their hats on. But the playoffs were lost by disastrous stretches earlier in the year.

I saw some sort of website mentioned that computes the chances of teams making the playoffs based on games remaining and the competition they faced.
About a week ago they gave the Jays a 1.1% chance of making the playoffs. Whether that went up or down since.... I have no idea.

Going 1-9 from July 26 to August 5 is what kiled the Blue Jays chances. If they went 4-6 (which is still mediocre), they would of been 68-53 and 4.0 games out of 1st place. A team can't lose 9 of 10 in the end of July and expect to be right there, especially in a tough division/league. This isn't the National League.
Finishing 2nd place in the East should probably be the goal at this point. Beating one of the monsters might be enough to make this season at least somewhat memorable.

I'm pretty sure we're done. It's not that we have only one team to beat. In our divison, we're 9 games back. That's pretty big. Even if we were to go on a roll, and the Yankees crashed, the Red Sox would be there. In the wild card race, we're 8.5 games back. Pretty big as well, but we have 2 other teams in front of us there too. We're done. But looking forward to the rest of the season anyways.

They're having problems getting punked by the O's, nevermind the Yanks and BoSox.

Contrary to what I said in another thread, we can't win the card or the division without passing the RedSox, but I just don't think we have enough time.
