Gus is apparently throwing well today for the Chiefs. 1 run on 3 hits, 50 pitches, through 4 innings, and he's coming out for the fifth. The hope is he'll be with the big club this weekend, and it looks like he's on track for that.
(Now that I've said that ... cue the fifth inning collapse.)

i have never had much faith in chacin. i just doubt his ability to sustain any long term success. fring starter on a non contending team.

The problem with Chacin is that he doesn't have overwhelming stuff and tends to give up a lot of hits. For someone who doesn't strike that many people out, that is indeed troublesome. Only a handful of pitchers have had continued long-term success with the peripherals that Gus is posting, and they are of the Hall of Fame calibre with names like Greg Maddux and David Wells.
In short, unless he works on improving his current repetoire or adding a new "out" pitch, hitters will eventually figure him out and he will get hammered. Chacin walks too many batters and gives up too many hits to continue to be this lucky. The lack of strikeouts is also a reason why I believe that Wang on the Yankees will eventually come back down to Earth (it's around 3 per 9 IP, which is well-below average). The difference being Wang's superior control in comparison to Gus'.

Wang should be able to repeat his success (reasonably) because he has a power sinker that enduces TONS of groundballs. Any pitcher that has nearly a 3.5 to 1 groundball to flyball ratio doesn't need a ton of strike outs to be successful. If he maintains his GB ratio and keep his home run rate down, he should be OK. The strike outs may come in time.
With Chacin, his GB:FB ratio last year was 0.99, and this year it is 0.73. So he's a flyball pitcher. The fact that he doesn't strike many hitters out and has command issues while pitching in the American League and Rogers Centre isn't a very good recipe for success. Personally, I thought he was a bit HR lucky last year. This year he hasn't been so lucky.
I think Chacin is overrated, but he should be a decent #4-5 starter most years, if healthy. What you can't teach is poise, and Chacin seems to have a head on his shoulders when he's out there, which might make up for a bit of his weaknesses with natural stuff.

Big Chacin fan, since he was the only jay to toss my son a ball....but I am a bit concerned, his numbers in his rehab starts are hardly mind bogglin.

I think most of that was from the beating he took in his first game which was a short outing.

I have never been a huge fan of Chacin myself. His minor league numbers were not the greatest, but he was somehow able to somehwhat succed at the Major League level. However after this set-back, from a non-analytical point of view I don't see him succeding much more as a starter.
Perhaps he can have a solid career as a middle relief guy....

I don't have much confidence in him. He might have pulled a JosH Towers, to a lesser extreme.

Chacin was definitly HR lucky last season... but this year his walks are up too. It's hard to say if that was the injury or if the league figured him out.
I really can't see the league hitting home runs at 3 times the rate just because the figured him... I am betting on the injury being the problem... I wonder if getting ready for the WBC and not pitching and then a short ST hurt him.
