The Texas Rangers signed veteran utility player Eric Young to a minor league contract Friday and assigned him to Triple-A Oklahoma. They expect him back in the major leagues within a few weeks.
Young has played in 15 major league seasons, including 2004 for the Rangers when they were in contention for the AL West title until the final week of the regular season. The 39-year-old Young was released by San Diego on Aug. 1 after playing 56 games for the Padres in each of the past two seasons.
"It's a good move for us. Everybody's excited about it," Texas manager Buck Showalter said. "He's a good player, gets a lot of big hits and plays a lot of positions."
The Rangers want Young to play regularly at Oklahoma for the next couple of weeks, and plan for him to return to the majors on or before Sept. 1, the day the rosters expand.
Young went to the Padres as a free agent after he hit .288 in 104 games for Texas in 2004, his only season ever in the American League. He is a .283 hitter in 1,726 career games while playing for seven major league clubs.
