PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - In less than three weeks, the Philadelphia Phillies suddenly have gone from sellers to buyers.
The Phillies acquired veteran lefthander Jamie Moyer and cash from the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night for minor league righthanders Andrew Baldwin and Andrew Barb.
"We thought we needed a veteran pitcher that we could slot on our club," said Phillies general manager Pat Gillick, whose team has been experimenting with unpolished rookie Scott Mathieson at the back end of the rotation. "Moyer has better than 17 years experience in the big leagues, in fact he has 18 years experience. He is a guy who will lend a lot of stability toward our pitching staff."
The 43-year-old Moyer was 6-12 with a 4.39 ERA in 25 starts for Seattle but just 0-3 with a 5.41 ERA in his last four outings. In 20 major league seasons with five teams, Moyer is 211-164 with a 4.17 ERA in 563 career games.
The soft-throwing southpaw also will be returning to play for his hometown team. Moyer is a native of Souderton, Pennsylvania and attended St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.
"I knew he wanted to pitch on a (contending) club, like a lot of (players) these days that have an opportunity to go to the playoffs," Gillick said. "The Mariners had lost nine straight and did not look like they were going to the playoffs, so he wanted to find a place that there was some opportunity to be in the playoffs."
In 38 relief appearances for Class A Lakewood, the 21-year-old Barb was 6-2 with a 2.23 ERA and 18 saves. Baldwin, 23, went 8-8 with a 4.04 ERA in 27 games - 20 starts - for Class A Clearwater.

One minute they're selling. The next they're buying. How nice it must be to be that close that you can change your mind a couple weeks later...
