I was just reading an article on ESPN. com about how certain announcers just can't understand why the Yankee fans are so fickle regarding A-Rod.
I would like to hear your opinions on A-Rod.
I created this poll, but please feel free to ad more open-ended replies as well.

I dont think hes having that bad of a year. I just wish Yankee fans would stop booing him and just let him be. I think hes really trying to hard and is putting way to much pressure on himself. The talent is there and everybody knows that.

The answer is simple. Anyone that comes with a 10 year $252 million dollar contract dragging behind them is expected to be, without question, the single best player in all of baseball. Unless of course someone carries a higher price tag, which no one currently does. Right now you could make a case for many others to be higher ranked than Alex Rodriquez. Also, you are expected to help the team succeed. In the Yankees case, anything less than a World Series ring is failure. In (and a few years before) Arods time as a Yankee, that goal has not been achieved. Someone has to be the scapegoat. In this case it's ARod.
You have to have personal success. But the team also has to win (championships) if you are making that much money. When neither of the two are happening, you're going to hear about it. Especially from the Yankee fans, media, and ownership. They expect nothing but the best from their players, 26 World Titles will do that. ARod seemingly can't handle that. Until he's hitting his 50 homers a year, driving in 140 and hitting above .300, he's failing on a personal level. Until the Yankees are winning the World Series again, he's failing regardless.
The Yankees stole ARod away from the Red Sox, and he was supposed to bring the Yankees back to glory. Instead the Red Sox shook it off and won the World Series without him. 5 years without a ring in New York is like 50 years anywhere else. They are getting desperate, and ARod is taking the brunt of the blame.
I couldn't agree more (for once) with Yankee fans. Even though they have a 200 million dollar (plus) payroll, $25 for one player is a lot of money. The guy should be virtually perfect, flawless in every aspect of the game. He is not. He can only blame himself though. He was the one that signed the albotross that is hanging around his neck.

Well said. He might not live up to his hype all the time, but when it comes down to it he has helped the Yankees plenty. New York fans have a knack for booing guys that don't produce constantly. Carlos Beltran came on this season for the Mets were a terrible showing for the fans. Now he is carrying the team, and the fans are with him.
Arod is carrying more than his load for the Yankees, but the fans aren't going to give him a break until he stops with the mistakes, or in this case the errors.

the reason why fans hate on him is b/c of his contract..and he's the posterboy for hating on player contracts and why some teams can't afford to keep their players...sigh...Carlos...
but thats a cheap reason to hate on the guy IMO.
the Yanks are paying 16M of his deal this year...they pay Jeter, prolly Moose and The Big Ugly, more.
And wheres everyone booing the hell out of Chan Ho Park and Mike Hampton?
some people in and around 2000 got PAID...probably like we'll never see players get paid again.
And for what it's worth A-rod probably caused salaries to come back down...so in a way, the people that boo him for what he makes, should really thank him for being the guy that really made owners and gm's wake up and realize that things HAD to change.

As I recall, no one was willing to give him close to that money. The Texas Rangers didn't simply outbid other teams, they outbid themselves.

Whatever. A-Rod doesn't represent an overpayment to the Yankees. So he makes like 12, 13% of their payroll. So what? He's one of the 4 or 5 best position players in baseball. It's worth it to them.
Yankee fans who boo him are really stupid. Seriously, why ruin the self-esteem of a guy like A-Rod? It can't do any good for your team...

I never understood that logic when it came to Carlos Beltran of the Mets not too long ago, or even Kaz Matsui. Sure they are playing badly, but do you really thinking booing and yelling slurs at them will change things?
Beltran hit a homerun in one of the first home games this season, and the crowd cheered, then got annoyed when he didn't want to come out for a curtain call. I don't blame the guy. The stadium ripped him apart for so long, no one is going to just shake that off all at once.

heh I hear y'all. I've never been one to boo one of my guys. It accomplishes nothing aside from putting more pressure on an already struggling player.

How can you guys not like ARod. I absolutely despise the Yankees. But ARod is one of if not the best player in baseball today. He is having an off season by Yankee standard but for any other team he would be cheered. Everyone has a down year, give the guy a break.

One thing that always irked me when ARod was with the Rangers was when people would blame his salary as the reason they couldn't put together a competitive team. The Rangers were always among the top spenders in their division those days even before adding in ARod's salary. When teams won their division with less money than they were paying the other 24 guys on the team, it's not ARod who was to blame, but piss poor management of the rest of the budget. Overpaid or not, he produced.
