Sidd Finch once got one up to 168 mph. www.museumofhoaxes.com/siddfinch.htmlIts hard to know the true record for this because of how the radar guns vary, and even just how often they have been used up until recently. I know Mark Wohlers was clocked a couple years ago at 103 mph.

My friend told me according to Guiness the most reliable recording has the record at 101.2 by Nolan Ryan.
As for Zumaya I watched that game and I never saw a 103 flash on the TV.
I was at the Dome when he threw 102 though. It was insane. I believe the pitch sequence was, 100-100-101-102. I was going nuts.

Zoom is ridiculous. There's nothing more fun than watching a straight power pitcher just dial it up over and over and over again.
Why the Tigers insist on Todd "I'm a dumb redneck and I can't strike anybody out and I'm ridiculously overpaid" Jones being their closer ahead of the vastly superior Zoom and Fernando Rodney, I have no idea. Maybe they're just progressive and realize you don't need your best pitcher in easy one-inning save situations. (Odds of that being the case on a Jim Leyland team: 0.)
I'd like to see whether he could keep hitting 99, 100 mph over 100, 110 pitches. If so, the Tigers could have a big 3 (Bonderman/Verlander/Zumaya) to rival Santana/Liriano/Garza next year.

I don't know if I would test that one.

Well he was exclusively a starter in the minors (but only went 5 or 6 innings a start), so it's not totally farfetched and the team should have an idea of how his arm holds up in long outings. It could be something to test out in spring training - have him work as a starter every 5th day, stretching him out, and see how he responds.
Then again if he's really hitting 100 regularly out of the pen, the Tigers may have their closer for the next five years and can let Jones fade gracefully into the background. And starting pitching isn't a huge deal in that stadium since the Tigers have great outfield D and it's a really bad homer park.

Admittingly, I don't know his history.

Thank you for reminding me of Sidd Finch. Unfortunately, I bought it hook, line and sinker. One of the best stories ever written!
