SAN DIEGO -- A day that dawned with grave concerns over the health of Chan Ho Park and the condition of the Padres' embattled rotation had a happy ending in the form of Monday night's 4-2 dousing of the scalding Dodgers.
"A great story," manager Bruce Bochy said. "That was the Tim Stauffer story. We put that kid in a spot. He pitched so well. I can't say enough about him. He saved us."
Working on three days' rest, taking an afternoon flight from Portland and arriving two hours before game time not knowing if he'd be pitching or even the identity of the team he'd be facing, Stauffer delivered the game of his young life.
The Padres' 2003 first-round pick (fourth overall) in the First-Year Player Draft, Stauffer (1-0) earned the win with six economical innings, yielding two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk.
Definitely impressive what Tim Stauffer did for the Padres, especially on such short notice. Seems like someone the Padres can count on for the future.
