CHICAGO -- Sitting on the outfield grass in the seconds after his violent collision with Chase Utley, Aaron Rowand took quick inventory.
His neck felt OK, as did his left wrist and right leg. When he stood up and tried to take a step, that's when he knew.
"That was when I realized my
ankle hurt," Rowand said. "I heard my neck crack when I hit the ground. My wrist didn't feel good. I was like, 'All that's all right, I can move my wrist.' Then I stood up, and went, 'Yep, that's the one that hurts.' My ankle took the brunt of it."
He left the game with a sprained left ankle and was waiting to head to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for precautionary X-rays.
The collision occurred when John Mabry led off the bottom of the eighth of Monday's 6-5 win with a fly ball to shallow center. Rowand stumbled for a second on his way in, then ran to the spot of the ball. He didn't expect to meet up with Utley, who caught the ball, but had his glove knocked off his hand, freeing the ball.
