The New York Mets added depth to their bullpen on Sunday, acquiring veteran righthander Guillermo Mota and cash considerations from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later.
Mota went 1-3 with a 6.21 ERA in 37 2/3 innings over 34 relief appearances for the Indians this year. Since 2002, he ranks fourth among major league relievers with 367 innings pitched.
Originally signed by New York as a shortstop in 1990, the 33-year-old has gone 23-27 with seven saves and a 3.80 ERA in 420 games with the Montreal Expos, Los Angeles Dodgers, Florida Marlins and Indians.
While with the Dodgers in 2003, Mota hit then-Mets catcher Mike Piazza with a pitch in spring training, leading to a bench-clearing brawl. "We think it's a move that has some potential upside without much cost to us," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said.
The Mets have been searching for extra bullpen help since Duaner Sanchez was injured in a taxi cab accident on July 30. They acquired Roberto Hernandez from Pittsburgh, but he has been ineffective.
