Yeah, I know... there's a joke in this. "What happened? Did you end up in a gay bar by mistake?"
No.
There I was, driving home from work and heading onto an overpass. At the top of the overpass, I see cars slowing, so I slow too. By the time I reach the top of the overpass, everybody is stopped. So I stop behind the last car. I can see the traffic light at the bottom of the overpass, and that the line of stopped cars begins there.
Behind me is a grey Plymouth Voyager, (that my brother helped build, no doubt... but that's another thread.) The thing is coming up the hill very fast. Within a second, I realize, he's not stopping......
Instinctively, I slip it into Neutral; pull the park brake; push hard on the main brake, and brace for impact.
His brakes locked, and I heard his tires squeal for at least four seconds....
CRASH!!!
He managed to swerve to the side somewhat, and my passenger side rear end took the brunt of the collision. He ended up coming to a stop after hitting the curb, which was triple the normal height, since we were on an overpass. His bumper was actually lifting the passenger side of the car off the ground a bit.
He comes out of the car, swearing and cussing, and says to me, "you're not bad. I got the worst of it."
Very true, when you look at both the cars afterwards.
So he calls his dad. I call the cops.
Then he comes to the car and says, "So, how do you want to do this? My dad's on his way."
"Well," I started, "I guess we'll wait for your dad," knowing full well I'd rather wait for the cops.
The last time I was in an accident, was over 15 years ago. I was hit from behind then, also. That time, the impact sent me into the car ahead of me. This time, it hadn't. But somehow, I still got charged.
Seems Ontario law states that if you hit someone ahead of you, no matter WHAT the circumstances, you are at fault. I'd love to have given the kid a break, but I never got one fifteen years ago.
So the dad arrives, and makes the same offer, noting the "Italy" hat I had on. Seems he's Italian also. He then asked if I called the cops, and I inform him they are on their way. So he suggests we find a solution before they arrive, and get outa there.
What, and leave the scene of an accident? Sorry. I'm not going to jail to spare your kid getting charged.
Shortly afterwards, the cops do arrive. Two cars...
One parks in front of us, the other behind. The one behind surveys the scene, and takes note of the long skid marks. He pulls the other officer aside and lets him know about them.
The usual stuff at that point. What happened... gimme your license, insurance, registration info, blah blah.
The officer in front takes it to the cruiser and runs us both through the CPIC system (check to see if either of us are wanted for anything.) A while later, he leaves his vehicle, gets my home number, and walks over to the kid.
Charged with follow too closely. Dad is not happy. "I gonna fight it," he says.
"You have the right to contest the charge, if you wish," the officer says.
They leave.
Officer takes my statement, and I make sure to indicate that I heard his tires squealing for four seconds behind me, and that I was on the top of the overpass at a full stop at the time.
How fast was that kid going to be able to lay four-wheel skid marks for four seconds uphill???
I suspect I'll get a summons for court soon, since daddy vowed to fight it...
I guess the good thing is, I'm in one peice, as are the two people in the other car.
Now... the part that made this terrible day all worthwhile...
I get on my way, and head down this overpass to the traffic light at the bottom of it. The right lane is blocked with pylons, and a taxi is ahead of the pylons with a truck ahead of him. We all move into the left-turn lane to get around him, and as we pass...
... I see that the taxi has rammed the rear of this truck! ;D
LMFAO!!! I was just rear-ended, because of a traffic tie-up caused by another rear-end not even 500ft ahead of me!!! ;D
Unbelievable day....
Anybody have any Jeep parts for sale???
