Hi everyone, I'm curious if there are any other big FH2 sports fans who are also fans of Musical Theatre? I know these aren't typically worlds that are intertwined stereotypically, but I know a lot of people who are fans of both. I co-host a Musical Theatre themed podcast called Sunset and 42nd ( www.sunsetand42nd.com) and really admire and respect the medium quite a bit. I am very much looking forward to Labor Day weekend as I am flying out to New York to see the closing performance of one of my favorite musicals, "Sweeney Todd." Anyone else enjoy musicals? If so - what are some of your favorite shows?

I appreciate your passion and I myself enjoy a little bit of culture now and again, but I'm afraid this thread is gonna be REAL slow. ;D

I did the spotlight back in high school for my school's plays and musicals. It was a lot of fun. I haven't been to many shows that were done on a professional level. I've seen two in total - Kiss Me Kate and Phantom of the Opera. Enjoyed both.

Oh, I have no question about that. I rarely "mix my passions" so to speak, but I figure I might as well see if there were some other fans of the theatre/arts out there. I try not to draw conclusions about people too quickly. Every now and then I'm actually surprised by people.

If for no other reason for how it revitalized a struggling Broadway theatre scene in the late 80s. However, it is not one of my favorite shows. I personally find it a bit overrated.

Which 5th grade was that Ty? Your 1st, 2nd or 3rd time through? ::rimshot:: Was that one of the "Cultures of the World" type things where everyone was assigned to bring in different ethnic foods and dress like "their assigned" country? I had fun with those.

I was nineteen years old when the musical Cats came to our town.
I couldn't wait to see it. After the show I was asked if I wanted to go meet some of the performers backstage. Man, I was thrilled. But when I got back there, they were drunk and out of control. Rumpus Cat and Macavity kept feeling up my leg. I tried to leave, but, Rumpleteazer held me down, and... and I was raped by Mr. Mistoffelees

As involved in the arts as I have been my entire life I have actually never attended an opera.
There is going to be a production of "Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny" directed by John Doyle who did the current Sweeney Todd revival on Broadway which was absolutely incredible and starring Patti Lupone and Audra McDonald in LA next February.
If there was ever an opportunity for me to hit the opera this is it!

I saw West Side Story by a junior college group and Evita by a touring company. I enjoyed both and would like to go to some more someday.

West Side Story is phenominal. Evita is one of those shows that really works for me or doesn't work for based on who is playing Eva Peron.
I'm really encouraged by the positive discussion going on here everyone!
Anyone else seen any shows that they like?

I'm not much for it, but the current closest thing to a gf I'm comfortable of having around does...long story short, when the little head did the thinking for the big head, it agreed to going down to NYC at some point for her. Ugh. I better be getting a RedSox game out of this.

I'm taking a class about American Musicals! We're studying 9 productions and I think we get to do a lot of improv in class. I'm really excited about it. Oh, and there's a slapstick production of Treasure Island being put on here. Auditions are in a couple of weeks, and a friend of mine and I are planning on going.

Yeah, I do. Lemme find the paper.... Ah, here we are. This list is as follows: Pygmalion My Fair Lady Romeo & Juliet West Side Story Gypsy Fiddler on the Roof Sweeny Todd Caroline, or Change Into the Woods I have to admit I don't know a lot about some of these, but the class overall should be a blast.

Romeo & Juliet was a good play, i have read it never actually seen it acted out. Fiddler on the roof is another one of my favs, saw it done at my High School. West Side Story is a nice little love story quite like Romeo and Juliet. Heard of My Fair Lady don't really know what it is about. The others i haven't heard of...hmmmm that class sounds like a lot of fun, Enjoy it!

I've seen The Grand Hotel which was excellent. We went to the dress rehearsal (it was packed) to get reduced tickets. You'd never have guessed it was a rehersal. I've also seen Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat complete with Donny Osmond and Jesus Christ Superstar complete with Dennis DeYoung. Alas, my time is now taken up in hunt of Veggie Tales Rocks! tickets and Disney on Ice.

Regarding your list that you are focusing on Shimmer: Pygmalion & My Fair Lady are the same story. One is a musical and the other is a play. It's the story of Eliza Doolittle. Classic theatre. Romeo & Juliet & West Side Story are essentially the same story. Star crossed lovers from conflicting backgrounds who fall in love but can't be together due to petty sociological situations that have nothing do do with them individually. Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, & Into the Woods are three of my favorite musicals. All are by Stephen Sondheim (who also wrote the lyrics to West Side Story) and are really good. My avatar is from the current Broadway revival of "Sweeney Todd". I am actually flying out to New York on Labor Day weekend to cover the closing on my podcast. Caroline, or Change is a more modern musical and it's quite good as well. I am not as familiar as it as I should be, but it was very well received. Given the list that you are studying, I am surprised that Sunday In the Park with George isn't being included as well. Anyway, if you need any insight about any of those as you study please don't hesitate to ask. I've actually done productions of Into the Woods, West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet and have done extensive studying on Sweeney Todd.

I was just reading off the titles of the required texts. Now that I actually have the syllabus (and have been to the class ) I have a better idea of what we're actually studying. It includes some specific musicals but also important people in the genre of Musical Theater. First on the list includes Show Boat, George Gershwin, and Porgy and Bess. Then we've got Gole Porter - with selections from Anything Goes and Kiss Me Kate. Then we're covering Rodgers, Hart, and Hammerstein followed by My Fair Lady. Later in the semester it's on to West Side Story, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, Caroline or Change, Wicked, and Rent. Unfortunately Fiddler got cut from our syllabus due to time constraints. That's a little disappointing, but I guess you can't have everything. It's a seminar, so actually I won't be going to class so much as I'll be teaching it. I have to admit, that's a bit intimidating. And it's an American musical theater class to the exclusion of some of my favorites - Nearly anything by Andrew Lloyd Weber and my all time favorite Notre Dame de Paris. C'est la vie.
