I'm excited. I'm already looking forward to: "Snakes On A Plane Two: Snakes On A Boat." Would you like snakes on a boat? Would you like them with a goat?

It's an actual movie, because I saw the trailer when I went to watch Miami Vice, which sucked by the way.

I'm sensing a bit of a marketing problem with this film ... Do people know what the heck it is? I've been told that it's something of a surreal comedy... But when you watch the trailers and TV ads, it's being portrayed as a pure action film. What is it?

Well, the trailers definintely show it as a thriller/action film. And I don't understand how it can be a comedy if the trailer has everyone screaming and anacondas falling out of the roof.

I don't understand the hype about this movie. I have no desire at all to see this movie.

Apparantly Samuel L. Jackson only took the part because he thought the title was cool.

This movie has become an cult classic, just because of the title. Don't take my word for it, that quote appears in the today's Sun.
The thing with this movie is, it's not being heavily advertised. They dont' want that. They movie became popular with those that found it on the internet, and that's the route they've taken. If you don't look for it, you won't find it. They're not trying to appeal to the general public. They are appealing to those that have fallen in love with it long before it was set to appear in theatres. It's worked well.
As for knowing anything about it. We'll all find out very soon. The makers of S.O.A.P didn't have a premiere or anything, so no movie reviewers have seen it. No one knows what to expect, you'll find out once you see it type thing.
As for me, my friend has bought me my ticket. So I'm off to see it tonight. I'm extremely excited. Call me stupid if you please, I think it's going to be amazing (that or a complete flop). Oh well either way I'm going to be drinking so it should be funny either way.
I'll come back later and/or tomorrow and give a synopsis.

The thing with this movie is, it's not being heavily advertised. Have you been out much recently? In Boston, ads are everywhere. A plane was pulling a banner, there are people handing out flyers, its even being advertised on elevator video screens. A poll on CNN asked "Do you plan on seeing Snakes on a Plane" 86% of people said NO

I don't think it would matter if this movie WASN'T advertised! Everyone knows about it, and I'm stoked for the night when I'll see it with all my buddies.

I read a review in the paper today and it said the movie was terrible.
I imagine the reason they went the internet advertising route was becuase it was a lot cheaper. Just get a bunch of people to start spamming everyone about the movie's website and with its goofy title, people will remmeber it more than if it was something like "Terror on Flight 191".

Pacific Air 121 was the previous title. Who would see that? I might go see it tonight. I've heard good buzz for what it is. Reviewers who are expecting art or masterful cinema are missing the point.

and people wonder why the gap is widening between the rich and poor. I dont think im the only one who sees the correlation between that and the increasing popularity of shows like Big brother and Survivor and movies like Snakes on a Plane

What a great movie. Honestly it was awesome. If you're expecting something that's going to win a grammy, you'll be disappointed. But if you take it for what it is (and that's a bit of a joke) then it's certainly a great movie. If you like Snakes eating people, you'll love this movie.

I hope you are joking. It's a frigging movie. I haven't seen Survivor or Big Brother, but this is fiction. It's not a "scripted-reality" movie.
The gap between the rich and the poor? What, only poor people would go see this or watch the shows you mention?
That's perhaps the most unintentionally funny thing I've read on this board. Ever.
USA Today gives it 3 and a half out of 4 stars. It's stupid fun. What's wrong with that?

Im certaintly not saying all poor people watch crappy low intelligence productions, but I doubt its much of a leap to say that rich, intelligent, successful people probably don't. I just think there's something wrong with culture when mindless entertainment is what so much of the public wants.

So is John Kerry your hero? You know, the rich, intelligent upper crust type?
I bet Donald Trump is intelligent. He certainly is successful. And he puts out "The Apprentice" (another show I've never seen. Is he trying to cash in on dumb and/or poor people? How about Paris Hilton? She's rich and successful at whatever it is that she supposedly does. And her show is crap too.
I have less respect for the rich people who put out crap like that than for actors or producers who want to put out a fun, campy cult-type movie like SOaP.
I don't see lumping SOaP in with reality tv schlock. I think most people going to see SOaP are going because it's goofy and hyped and a ridiculous concept. Sam Jackson uttering the famous phrase doesn't hurt, as he is the man.
But reality TV viewers fall into a lot of categories. The idiots who think it is all real and that's how people really act, those who are tuning in just on the hope of seeing something outrageous, those who tune in to see how sick or self-degrading people will be, those who tune just because it can be so stupid it's funny etc...
Either way, it's just a movie. Who cares? I feel worse about a humanity that goes to see "Step Up" or "Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift" than I do about people who would see SOaP.

Paris Hilton being rich has nothing to do with Paris Hilton being "successful."

at first I thought Snakes on a Plane was a comedy. Then again I do find terrible horror movies to be funny due to the fact of terrible effects, graphics, actors, etc.

I saw SOaP last night. It was stupid, lame, poorly scripted, completely implausible and predictable.
I loved it! A lot of stupid fun. The screenplay was idiotic. It felt like a C movie from the 70s (as it wasn't even as polished as a B movie.)
But it wasn't boringly stupid. It was just fun. I went to a late showing and the theater was about half full. Everyone got a lot of good laughs out of it. Most of my laughs were at just how silly it was. You could tell the actors did not take it seriously (except maybe the no-namers who looked like it was their first acting gig!)
All in all, a decent event movie because of all the hype, but if you are expecting anything other than what the hype is all about, then you will be disappointed.

It came in first at the box office...or did it?
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theatres, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. Final figures will be released Monday.
1. Snakes on a Plane, $15.25 million. 2. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, $14.1 million. 3. World Trade Center, $10.8 million. 4. Accepted, $10.1 million. 5. Step Up, $9.9 million. 6. Barnyard: The Original Party Animals, $7.5 million. 7. Little Miss Sunshine, $5.7 million. 8. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, $5 million. 9. Material Girls, $4.6 million. 10. Pulse, $3.5 million.
There's more to the numbers than just the dollars they raked in.

Why wouldn't it do well?
Ever since Pulp Fiction a lot of people really enjoy hearing Samuel L. Jackson say, "Motherf---er!"
That's at least a good a reason to go see a movie as any. Jeez, people pay money to see Keanu Reeves movies for cryin' out loud, even though it's pretty clear that he reached the limits of his range in that second Bill & Ted opus.
