When I register to vote, I fill in party affiliation with "Anti-Mason." I suspect that I may be the only member of this party in California at the moment because when my ballot arrives, they have me listed as "Independent." I'm sure there is a civil rights lawsuit somewhere in there, but I am far too lazy to pursue it.
I am all over the map in terms of views on national issues. On abortion and personal vice legality I am extremely to the left. Makes me something of a Libertarian. However, I also favor social medicine..and social law, two things which I believe the government should provide for everyone in equal measures. I am not against wealth, but I don't feel that preservation of your life and access to justice should be things which are subject to being bought by the highest bidder.
I only begrudgingly approve of welfare, seeing it as the needed bribe that we must pay the poor to keep them from robbing the rest of us.
I'm for junking our present jury of peers system and replacing it with a system which employs trained, professional jurors. I would also alter the rules of evidence so as to greatly expand the range and type of information which may be presented to the jury. Let the jury decide what is relevant, not the judge.
I'm for keeping our armed forces strong, but against private handgun ownership. I favor legalizing marijuana, but also in establishing extremely severe penalties for misconduct while under the influence.
I very much favor the space program and want to see it fully funded.
I am against government funding of the arts, including PBS. Art should thrive or fall on the merits of the artist, not receive artificial aid or tax payer sponsorship. Deconstructed, government funding of the arts is actually a huge number of people paying a small number of people to tell them what they should and should not appreciate in the way of entertainment.
I am outraged at the notion of vouchers for private schools and see that as a gross violation of the first amendment.
I did not think the US justified in invading Iraq, although getting rid of Saddam wasn't the worst cause for which to fight. However, now that we have gone and done it, I wouldn't want to see any sort of a pullout just to be exiting. After all this blood and treasure, we should at least try for a favorable outcome...it's possible. How probable? I don't know.
So.....someone tell me. What is my political affiliation?

I never realized how closely matched our politics were GS. I could have nearly cut and pasted that whole schpeel as my own.
